Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on The Architecture of Happiness by Alain de Botton.
A central point of this book (appx. 280 pages) is that buildings and spaces shape our emotions & character, as architecture resonates with our ideals and values, and can support (or undermine) our capacity for happiness.

Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, May 6th at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on The Enchiridion (literally the "Handbook") by Epictetus.
For those who have heard about Stoicism and want a place to start, I'd recommend this one. Most importantly, its not too long: depending on the translation, it's 30-50 pages, and packed with sage advice. This is one of the seminal works of Stoicism and has been widely read through the ages for its wisdom.
Note: Since it's short, sometimes this is included with his Discourses like the current Penguin version. It can also be called simply The Handbook but most commonly Enchiridion.)

Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on Kokoro by Natsume Sōseki.
Extremely popular and one of the all-time bestselling Japanese novels (appx. 250 pages), this tells about the relationship between a young man, and an older man whose long confession shows how he has become isolated and beset by guilt, betrayal, and lonlieness in Meiji Japan

Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on The Fall by Albert Camus.
Albert Camus's last complete work, of which Sartre thought it was his most beautiful, The Fall (appx. 147 pg) is a confession by a successful, highly respected defense lawyer, who undergoes a crisis and a "fall" from grace, akin to man's fall from the Garden of Eden. As a premier existentialist writer, Camus explores themes of innocence, imprisonment, non-existence, and truth.

The Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke.
This is based on an early draft of the movie of the same name, and will help explain some of the nuances of the movie more explicitly for those of us who are a bit confused by it. It shows how an alien intelligence has guided humanity in mysterious ways through time, and focuses on a manned mission to Saturn.

Just in time for Halloween, the Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on the tempting Faust Part I by Goethe.
Faust: Part I is a tragic drama set in verse about a scholar who, dissatisfied with the limits of human knowledge, makes a pact with the devil for boundless experience, leading to the seduction and ruin of a woman. This is one of the central works of German and world literature, posing questions about ambition, desire, guilt, salvation, and what it means to seek meaning beyond ordinary life.

For Election Day (the previous day), the Central NJ Book Club on Wed, November 4, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be covering the original political science classic The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli.
The Prince is a short (80-150 pg. depending on translation) 16th‑century political treatise in which Machiavelli offers blunt, often amoral advice to rulers on how to acquire and maintain power, arguing that effectiveness and stability can require deception, force, and the appearance of virtue.
Note: I recommend reading The Prince with an introduction that explainins the political situation in Renaissance Florence in which Machiavelli lived and the Italian peninsula overall.

Well, so far this year I've been "nice" in terms of the size of the book club selections, but of course it would only be a matter of time before I went back on Santa's "naughty" list. The Central NJ Book Club on Wednesday, December 2, 2026 at 7:30 pm in the basement will be on the quite large Middlemarch by George Eliot. So get reading now!
Middlemarch is a 19th‑century realist English novel subtitled “A Study of Provincial Life,” following the intertwined lives in an English town.
So why read such a large book? Many critics and writers consider Middlemarch the greatest English novel because of its extraordinarily rich, omniscient narration, the psychological depth and moral complexity of its characters, and its vast yet precise portrayal of an entire provincial community over time. In particular it explores marriage, vocation, class, and the complex web of social and moral responsibility.
The book is between 700-900 pages, depending on footnotes/annotations.
